Occupational Therapy

Our Mornington Occupational Therapists make therapy for kids and families fun, accessible and empowering.

Occupational Therapy

Nurturing independence, empowering children.

One of the things we love at Grow Health and Therapy Hub is that everyone is different. We support families across a whole range of diagnoses and developmental needs. Our approach is simple – to make Occupational Therapy as fun, engaging and accessible as possible.

Occupational Therapy helps children and teens to master the everyday skills of daily life. We all learn and develop in different ways – some of us need more support in learning these key skills for independence. We’ll assess your child’s abilities, strengths and opportunities for growth, and design a therapy program that supports their development in a fun, engaging and age-appropriate way.

Who we work with

Everyone is welcome at Grow Health and Therapy Hub. Whether your child has a formal diagnosis, developmental delays or you feel they just need some additional support, we’re here to help.

Our Early Intervention program allows us to support children as young as three, while our family-focused approach means we can help right through to adulthood.

Neurodiverse families are very welcome. Our approach is neuroaffirming and empowering, and we encourage a collaborative approach to care, because you know your family best. Here are some of the ways Occupational Therapy can support:

  • ADHD
  • Autism
  • General Developmental Delay
  • Anxiety
  • Sensory processing differences
  • Emotional regulation and self-regulation skills
  • Social skills and peer interactions (including support for teenagers)
  • Functional capacity assessments (NDIS)
  • Fine motor skills (e.g. handwriting, cutting, drawing)
  • Gross motor skills and coordination
  • Daily living skills (e.g. dressing, toileting, feeding, routines)
  • Play skills and engagement
  • Executive functioning (planning, organisation, attention)
  • Interoception (understanding body signals)
  • Behaviour support and building positive coping strategies
  • Confidence, independence and participation in everyday activities

Reports & Assessments

The Assessment process is an important step in getting to understand your child and your family’s goals. Our Occupational Therapists will speak with you and your child, before running through a range of assessments to help them understand where your child is at, and what support they need.

As part of this process, we can also provide formal reports if required. Alternatively, we can create a therapy plan that can then be implemented by the Occupational Therapist or our Allied Health Therapists.

Referrals

If you have funding through the NDIS or the Thriving Kids program, you will need a referral from your GP or Maternal and Child Health Nurse (MCHN).

Private clients, including those accessing private health insurance, can self-refer, with no formal referral needed.

FAQs

Common questions about Occupational Therapy

How long does the assessment process take?

The assessment process is important to enable us to understand your concerns, your child’s current skills and what the key goals and priorities are. This typically takes one to two sessions, and includes a parent discussion as well as a one-on-one assessment before we work together to collaborate on your therapy goals. Report writing time is additional to the assessment appointments, as this is a thorough, structured process.

For many of our clients, their Occupational Therapist is just one of a whole crew of professionals on the support team. One of our goals at Grow Health and Therapy Hub is to make it easier to manage your family’s needs. We work alongside all the other therapists in the Hub, and communicate regularly with your entire team.

One of the benefits of having an Allied Health Assistant is that often, they’ll work with you on programs set by your Occupational Therapist as well as other therapists on your team. So they know exactly what’s going on, and what you need from us.

If you need us to connect with other doctors or supports outside Grow Health and Therapy Hub, just let us know and we’ll work with you to make it happen.

You don’t need a diagnosis to see our Occupational Therapists. Whether you’re working towards a diagnosis or just need some extra support in a few areas, we can help.

Of course, life gets busy, so we know it’s not always possible to find the time to practice as much as you might like, and that’s totally fine.

As a family-focused practice, we’re big believers in the power of having families involved through therapy. Part of this is building a strong partnership for collaboration, but it’s also about fostering positive relationships within your family. Children love to have their parents, care-givers and siblings involved in their therapy. Given that so much of our focus is on your family life, it makes sense that everyone is involved at various times. As well as making it fun and engaging for your child, it also lets us see how we can support your child to help reach your goals as a family.

The other benefit is helping you and your family to learn the strategies and skills that can help you support your child at home. Having the con

Absolutely. Occupational Therapy can focus on building social skills, sharing, turn taking and how to play with others. We can also work in partnership with our Child Psychologist and Play Therapist to provide the best support for your child.

Any skill takes practice to master, so we’ll often give you and your child some activities to work on at home. Of course, life gets busy, so we know it’s not always possible to find the time – we get it.
