Speech Pathology

Your child has big ideas to share. Our Mornington Speech Pathologists are experienced in helping children find their voice.

Speech Pathology

Helping kids bring their big ideas into the world

Being able to communicate your thoughts, feelings and ideas is an essential part of life. For some children, being able to share their thoughts and be understood can be a challenge—and we can help.

We partner with children to overcome speech hurdles, giving them the tools and strategies they need to communicate with confidence. Whether that includes speech therapy or access to alternative communication tools, we’re here to make sure they’re heard in whatever way works for them.

What we help with

Speech Skills

Through focused therapy, we can support your child to improve clarity, pace and volume, as well as supporting speech errors like lisps, sound substitutions and stuttering.

Expressive Language

Speech therapy is about more than sounds. We can also help your child to understand language, supporting them to find the right words and non-verbal cues to express themselves clearly.

Receptive Language

Through focused therapy, we can support your child to improve clarity, pace and volume, as well as supporting speech errors like lisps, sound substitutions and stuttering.

Literacy

Speech therapy isn’t just about what your child says. We can also support them in developing their literacy skills, including phonics, reading and writing. We can also support these skills through our Tutoring service, as well as our Allied Health Assistant.

Language Delay

Our Early Intervention programs provide additional support for children whose speech is delayed.

Conversational Skills

If your child struggles in understanding social cues and the flow of conversation, our Speech Therapists can work with them to improve these skills and support their social development. This can be in conjunction with our Occupational Therapist or Play Therapist.

Therapy for everyone

No formal diagnosis is needed to see a Speech Pathologist. If you have concerns about your child’s ability to communicate, or are unsure whether they’re meeting milestones for their speech, we encourage you to make an appointment.

Our Speech Pathologists can assess your child and provide you with a therapy plan to support their goals, or offer reassurance that their development is within normal ranges.

Allied Health Assistant

Making therapy more accessible

Our Allied Health Assistant makes therapy more affordable, and more accessible. Our Speech Pathologist will assess your child and develop a clear therapy plan and goals. Then, your Allied Health Assistant will take over, putting the plan into practice and conducting your speech therapy session. It means you’re getting qualified support, while making your NDIS, Thriving Kids or private budget stretch further.

Referrals

We’re here to support families however – and whenever – you need. At Grow Health and Therapy Hub, we accept referrals from GPs and Maternal and Child Health Nurses, as well as other medical practitioners. A referral is required to receive funding from NDIS, Thriving Kids or Medicare.

Self-referrals from private clients are also welcome.

FAQs

Common questions about Speech Pathology

How long does the assessment process take?

The assessment process is important to enable us to understand your concerns, your child’s current skills and what the key goals and priorities are. This typically takes one to two sessions, and includes a parent discussion as well as a one-on-one assessment before we work together to collaborate on your therapy goals. Report writing time is additional to the assessment appointments, as this is a thorough, structured process.

You don’t need a diagnosis to see our Speech Pathologist for speech therapy. Many families come to us with children and teenagers who need support with mild speech errors like lisps and articulation errors

Like anything, correcting speech errors takes practice to master. Your therapy program may include tasks to practice at home. We know how tricky it can be to get kids to do their homework, so we focus on making tasks fun. Games are a popular way to get kids practicing their speech sounds, and they have the bonus of being something fun to do together.

Of course, life gets busy, so we know it’s not always possible to find the time to practice as much as you might like, and that’s totally fine.
